August TUSS News for Staff

The Towson University Staff Senate (TUSS) is the advocate body for all university staff employees. All TU staff are general members of the Senate and are encouraged to attend general meetings. Our meetings are opportunities for all staff employees to be involved in institutional planning and amplify staff input. Join us! 

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE RECENT TUSS MEETING: 

  • As of October 1, 20% of purchases must be small businesses. More information to follow from Procurement office.  
  • Incorrect deductions from paychecks made by the Central Payroll Office have been refunded.  
  • Enrollment goal is 19,530. Enrollment is forecasted to possibly fall slightly short but is not officially evaluated until after drop/add ends.  
  • A presentation was given on TU Budget Structure. See email for slides. 
  • Dual admission agreement with Harford Community College has been finalized.  
  • HR reviewed the hiring pause including what it means and what is required to request an exception.  
  • HR discussed what is required to request a temporary pay adjustment. Forms can be found in the Forms Repository.  
  • Jen Morrow presented on the Employee Assistance Program (EAP.) Slides are included with the email. Staff are encouraged to explore the offers in this program as they are part of overall employee compensation and may be beneficial. 
  • Parking enforcement begins August 12. Be sure you have a current permit and park in appropriate spaces. 
  • Information was shared about campus updates. Health Professions building will fully open this fall. New Tiger statues have been installed, one of the existing statues is being refurbished and installed at TUNE. New electronic road signs are being installed and TU letters are being installed at Burke Avenue and York Road.  
  • USM and TU are monitoring AFSCME agreement and determining if there is anything they need to address. 
  • Welcome to new HR partner Emily Flanagan!!! 
  • Elections Committee: Special election is ongoing. The nomination acceptance window closes on 8/20. Ballots will be sent out on 8/22. Monitor your email. Please DO NOT forward ballots as they cannot be used more than once.  
  • Communications Committee: The newsletter is being sent via email as well as TU Today to increase awareness.  In addition, to keep the TUSS newsletter on a consistent day of the week throughout the year, the TUSS News for Staff post will be on Tuesdays. 
  • CUSS: Met at Sailsbury on August 13. Discussion was held on duplicate fees, Title IX, and expressive events on campuses. CUSS is working on gauging how shared governance works on various campuses.  

REMINDERS: 

  • The next TUSS general meeting is September 18, 2024. Send agenda items to TUSS@towson.edu before September 9, please. General members are welcome to submit items for consideration and encouraged to attend online. 
  • The TUSS Awards Committee and the TUSS Events and Engagement Committee are open to general members. If you’re interested in joining, reach out to TUSS@towson.edu.

The University System of Maryland Board of Regents Staff Awards represents the highest honor bestowed by the Board of Regents for achievements of exempt and non-exempt staff employees from institutions within the University System of Maryland.
