Celebrate First Generation Students with a week full of events

Are you the first in your immediate family to attend college? We want to celebrate you!

Student Success Programs, Student Affairs, the Student Government Association and the Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity invite you to join Towson University in celebrating national Generation One Day on Wednesday, November 8th!

There will be a week’s worth of events starting on Monday, November 6, which will celebrate TU’s First-Generation Population! All members of the TU community are welcome even if you do not identify as Gen One to learn more and celebrate everyone that is around you.

Here is a complete list of events happening:

Monday, November 6th 

Chat and Chew Tabling event from 2:30 4:30pm in the University Union

Collaboration with SGA

This will be our kickoff event! We will be speaking about the events that will taking place throughout the week and answering questions about FAFSA this year with food and drinks available. Students can stop by, meet their support team, and hear more about the events we have planned for the week.

Tuesday, November 7th

FAFSA Jeopardy sessions at 11a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. – University Union Room 349

We will host FAFSA Jeopardy where students can participate and answer trivia questions relative to FAFSA to increase knowledge and awareness.

Financial Aid Workshops

We are hoping to tie the workshops and Jeopardy together into one event. We are still awaiting Financial Aid’s response regarding their level of participation.

Wednesday, November 8th

Gen One Day, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. (UU Ballrooms A,B,C)

This will be a resources tabling event hosted throughout the day with participation from:

  • Career Center
  • Counseling Center
  • Health Center
  • Financial Aid
  • Civic Engagement
  • TU Foodshare
  • Tutoring and Learning
  • International Students & Scholars
  • Library
  • Center for Student Diversity’s student orgs
  • Sisterhood
  • Academic Advising, Retention, and Completion

Thursday, November 9th

Gen One Panel, 4 – 5 p.m., University Union, Room 322

Moderator: Citiyana Amsalu (current first-gen student/ Ethiopian-Eritrean Student Association President)

Guest Speakers Include:

  • Dr. Patricia Bradley
  • Dr. Anthony Skevakis
  • Jordan Colquitt (SGA President)
  • Bobga Gang (alumni)
  • Mayra Corea (current student)

Students will be able to submit questions relative to the first-gen experience.

Dodgeball, 7 — 10 p.m., Burdick Hall

First-gen and Student Success Program students compete in a classic game of dodgeball to facilitate fellowship and community. Faculty and staff are welcome to play.

Friday, November 10th

Gen One Banner Signing and Creative Keepsake, 11a.m. -4 p.m., Unity Lounge

First-gen students, faculty, and staff can stop by to sign the 2023 Gen One Banner and create a keepsake to commemorate the activities of the week.

SGA iPad Giveaway

SGA will be giving away two iPads to the student with most participation in the week’s activities and who answers trivia questions.

Daily Activities

  • SGA will be posting a question on Instagram each day, along with offering a prize each day.
  • Passport Bingo where students receive a sticker/stamp for events attended with potential to win a prize on Friday.
  • First-gen shirts and pins daily giveaway.
