TU Crime and Punishment in the American South – Apply now!
Head south with TU in Summer 2023! Spend time in Georgia, Alabama, and Louisiana exploring the complicated historical and contemporary intersections of race/racism, criminal justice, and place. Learn about the historical ideas and practices deeply rooted in the system of slavery and segregation that continue to influence contemporary criminal justice processes and racial perceptions of criminal propensity. Our journey will take us to historic and cultural sites in Savannah, Atlanta, Montgomery, New Orleans.
The program features visits to The National Museum of African American History & Culture, Eastern State Penitentiary, the American Prohibition Museum, Stone Mountain, the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic & Park National Center for Civil and Human Rights, the Legacy Museum, the New Orleans African American History Museum, the Whitney Plantation, and more! Other highlights include guest lectures from local experts, feeding the alligators on a Bayou tour in New Orleans, and a riverboat cruise in Savannah.
Participants will choose to take one of the following: CRMJ 375 Topics in Criminal Justice (3 credits), IDIS 494 Travel and Study in Interdisciplinary Studies (3 credits), and AFST 411 Topics in African-American Studies (3 credits) with Dr. Elyshia Aseltine.
