Cyberscam Alert: fake retirement benefits meetings

The Office of Information Security (OIS) warns about a current phishing scam targeting faculty and staff.

About this scam
TU faculty and staff have recently received email messages offering financial or retirement planning services from a sender named “Alexa Brown.” These messages are not connected with nor endorsed by the university. See a PDF example of the phish. Additional info:

  • These scam emails offer consultations about topics that include retirement income and Medicare coverage.
  • Recipients are referred to as “valued employee[s] of Towson University.”
  • The emails do not originate from a TU email address and have the “External Email” tag applied. 

What to do if you think you’ve received this scam
If you receive this or a similar suspicious email in your TU account:

  • Do not reply, click to unsubscribe or click to register.
  • Report the phish by using the ‘Report Phish’ button in Outlook on a computer, or by forwarding the email to phishing@towson.edu.
  • Delete the email.
