Come hear about the great work of your COFAC colleagues. This colloquium includes three sabbatical presentations and will likely run until 5pm.

Elia Powers
Associate Professor| Department of Mass Communication
Performing the News: Self-Presentation, Stigma, & The Cost of Covering

Dr. Elia Powers presents the findings from his forthcoming book, which examines a systemic problem that is not commonly addressed in discourse on diversity in journalism. Journalists who are members of historically marginalized groups often feel pressure to conform to dominant-group norms when performing the news. Through in-depth interviews with journalists, activists, educators, and other thought leaders voicing the need for change, this book suggests ways to make journalism more inclusive and representative of audiences.

Tavia La Follette
Associate Professor| Department of Theatre Arts
Pop-Aganda: Revolution & Iconography

La Follette will share her latest Sites of Passage project with Russia, called Pop-Aganda: Revolution & Iconography.
After three research trips to Russia, La Follette selected eight multidisciplinary, social practice-oriented artists in Russia and the U.S.

Joe Kraemer
Associate Professor | Department of Electronic Media and Film
Screenwriting and Pandemic Filmmaking

This presentation will cover the author’s experience writing an original feature film screenplay, titled The White Deer. A political thriller about a journalist investigating a militant white nationalist cell, the script was researched and developed at two artist residencies during the sabbatical – La Macina Di San Cresci in Italy and the Hambidge Center in Georgia, USA. The presentation will also feature an excerpt from It Takes Courage, a short educational docudrama film produced while on sabbatical in September 2021.
