Study Away is happening – apply by March 15!

It’s time to get back out there! Domestic Study Away is happening and Summer 2022 applications are due by March 15!

TU is offering three short-term domestic faculty-led study away programs in Summer 2022 in Puerto Rico, Montana, Maine and Florida.

Introductory Biology in the Caribbean 

This program allows students to study introductory biology in Puerto Rico and fulfill the a Core 7 lab science requirement. Students will explore unique ecosystems and interact with local plants and animals in Puerto Rico.  Learn about ecology, evolution, genetics, and the scientific process. Conduct authentic research while hiking in a cloud forest and kayaking a bioluminescent bay. Program highlights include a visit to discover La Parguera mangroves and El Yunque National Forest.Students will take both of the following courses for a total of 4 credits to fulfill a Core 7 requirement:

  • BIOL 120 Principles of Biology – Lecture (3 credits)
  • BIOL 120L Principles of Biology – Lab (1 credit)

Native America: A Pilgrimage in Reciprocity in Montana

 Native America: A Pilgrimage in Reciprocity provides TU students a unique opportunity to examine the art and social practice of performance, ritual, and culture through an ecological and interdisciplinary lens while staying on a Native American reservation in Montana. Taught by Dr. Tavia LaFollette of the TU Theatre Arts department in collaboration with Native Elder Rachel Bowers, this program is designed to teach students guardianship, conservation and reciprocity while reflecting on the actions of our ancestors – the sacrifices made and the cultures lost.

Program highlights include staying on the Flathead Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, a day trip to Yellowstone National Park, museum visits, performances, and cultural activities, a visit to a Bison range, and a completed Cultural Value Project to bring home. Students will take one of the following courses for a total of three academic credits:

  • THEA 488 Theatre Visitation and Analysis (3 credits)
  • THEA 680 Special Topics (3 credits; grad only)
  • IDFA 471 Special Topics in Social Action (3 credits)
  • IDFA 571 Special Topics in Social Action (3 credits; grad only)

From the Leaves to the Keys: Culture and Psychology Across the United States

This psychology study away program in Maine, Miami, and the Florida Keys provides a comparative examination of the values, ideas, and practical applications of psychology in both the North- and South-Eastern United States, as well as their adjacent cultures (e.g., Canada to the North; Cuba and South America to the South). Participants will seek to understand human behavior and cognitive processes through the exploration of psychological theories, their application in the real world, and how they are shaped by cultural variation. Observe psychological concepts first-hand through interactions with local residents, scholars and students from local universities, employees from local organizations, and guest lectures related to life, work, and relationships across distinct cultures.

Program highlights include visits to the Immigrant Welcome Center of Greater Portland, the Maine Historical SocietyAcadia National Park, a walking food and culture tour of Little Havana in Miami Beach, and a service project with the Florida Immigrant Coalition.

Students will take the following courses for a total of 6 credits:

  • PSYC 494 Travel and Study Abroad in Psychology (3 credits)
  • PSYC 470 Special Topics in Psychology (3 credits)
