Major Changes to Cook Library Spaces & Services

Academic Commons drawingConstruction on the Academic Commons on Cook Library’s main floor is slated to begin during the week of 2/28.

In preparation for this construction, a number of library spaces and services are changing.

Most significantly, the 3rd (main) floor will be closed for three weeks (except for the lobby, 24/7 space, and Starbucks). Most of the work will take place between 5pm and 2am nightly and this will often be loud.

Here is a list of what changes are scheduled to take place when:

– Assistive Technology, Scanners, and Listening Stations Moving to 2nd Floor

  • What: The assistive technology stations, the scanners, and the listening stations are moving from the 3rd floor to the 2nd floor
  • When: Thursday, February 17th until further notice
  • Alternative: This technology will be unavailable as it’s being moved, but it should be available on the 2nd floor shortly after the move is complete

– Main (3rd) Floor Study Cubicles are Unavailable

  • What: Main (3rd) floor group study cubicles will be unavailable
  • When: Friday, February 18th until further notice
  • Alternative: 2nd floor study rooms and cubicles can be reserved by individuals and groups

– Main (3rd) Floor Reference Collection Moved to 4th and 5th Floors

  • What: The physical books in the reference collection on the main (3rd) floor have been interfiled with the books in the stacks on the 4th and 5th floors. Overflow books that cannot be interfiled at this time are now in the PE section on the 4th floor.
  • When: Friday, February 18th until further notice
  • Alternative: If you cannot locate a book, you can chat or text our staff. Also we have many reference books available online through our databases.

– Data Studio Relocation

  • What: The Data Studio’s specialized computers are being moved to the 2nd floor, outside of room 208
  • When: The week of February 21 until further notice
  • Alternative: These computers will be unavailable while they are being moved, but they will be available again in their new location shortly after the move.

– Maps on Main Floor (3rd) are Moving to the Back of the 4th Floor

  • What: The oversized maps located on the main (3rd) floor are moving to the back of the 4th floor
  • When: The week of February 21st until further notice
  • Alternative: The maps will be unavailable while they are being moved, but will be available in their new location once the move is complete

– Reduction in Library Space Available 24/7

  • What: The space available 24/7 in Cook Library will revert back to only the 24/7 Study Space next to Starbucks
  • When: Monday, February 21st until further notice
  • Alternative: Other buildings, such as the College of Liberal Arts, have extended hours

– Help Desk Temporarily Moving to the 2nd Floor

  • What: The Research Help and Circulation Desks are temporarily moving to the 2nd floor, in the space between Library IT offices and the Graduate Reading Room.
  • When: The desk will be temporarily closed on Wednesday, February 23rd from 8am-noon. The desk will be in its new temporary location from noon on 2/23 for 3 weeks
  • Alternative: Chat or text questions to 410-774-1398

– Writing Center Services Moving to 2nd Floor

  • What: The Writing Center tutors stationed in Cook Library are moving to the 2nd floor periodicals desk area
  • When: Wednesday, February 23rd until further notice
  • Alternative: Contact the Writing Center to make an appointment at an alternate location

– Main (3rd) Floor is Closed for Nightly Construction

  • What: The main (3rd) floor will be closed except for the lobby, 24/7 space, and Starbucks. Work will take place between 5pm and 2am nightly and this will often be loud.
  • When: The floor closes on Wednesday, February 23rd at noon and work is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 28th. The floor will be closed for approximately 3 weeks. After 3 weeks, the Help Desk will return to the 3rd floor.
  • Alternative: Ear plugs are available at the Help Desk which will temporarily be located on the 2nd floor. Please consider other buildings, such as the College of Liberal Arts, which have some evening hours.
