Summer 2022 Study Away in Maine and Florida

From the Leaves to the Keys: Culture and Psychology Across the United States

Study away in Maine, Miami, and the Florida Keys this summer for a comparative examination of the values, ideas, and practical applications of psychology in both the North- and South-Eastern United States, as well as their adjacent cultures (e.g., Canada to the North; Cuba and South America to the South). Participants will seek to understand human behavior and cognitive processes through the exploration of psychological theories, their application in the real world, and how they are shaped by cultural variation. Students will observe psychological concepts first-hand through interactions with local residents, scholars and students from local universities, employees from local organizations, and guest lectures related to life, work, and relationships across distinct cultures.

Program highlights include visits to the Immigrant Welcome Center of Greater Portland, the Maine Historical SocietyAcadia National Park, a walking food and culture tour of Little Havana in Miami Beach, and a service project with the Florida Immigrant Coalition.

Students will take the following courses for a total of 6 credits:

  • PSYC 494 Travel and Study Abroad in Psychology (3 credits)
