Welcoming Newcomers: Understanding Linguistically Diverse Learners’ Early Development

Thursday, June 3rd  |  9–10:30am

Presenter: Dr. Keri-Anne Croce

For many newcomers, the classroom will provide their first opportunities for long term sustained experiences with English. This presentation will help participants develop a tool kit that will allow
teachers to encourage newcomers to continue to develop as critical thinkers while also learning an additional language.

Preparing General Educators to Identify and Support Multilingual Learners with Disabilities

Thursday, June 3rd  |  1–2:30 pm

Presenter: Dr. Patricia Rice Doran

This workshop will provide an overview of research regarding multilingual learners (MLs) with disabilities in the classroom setting. Participants will review research-based practices for identifying these learners and providing evidence-based interventions within a culturally and linguistically responsive framework. Participants will also review strategies appropriate for support of this population in classroom settings and describe approaches to build preservice and inservice teachers’ knowledge and skills for serving MLs with disabilities.

Use Multicultural Children’s Literature to Promote Preservice Teachers’ Understanding and Practice of Multilingualism

Presenters: Dr. Maria Perpetua Socorro U. Liwanag, Dr. Xiaoming Liu, and Dr. Huili Hong

This presentation will share high-quality and underrepresented multicultural children’s literature and further discuss how to use it to engage into critical conversations about diversity and equity issues. In addition, this PD introduces an ABC model that aims to enhance preservice teachers’ understanding and practice of multiculturalism.
