When Art Education Met Occupational Therapy: An Interprofessional Collaboration

During the Fall 2020 semester, Art Education majors and Occupational Therapy (OT) students, worked together to apply theories from their respective disciplines to create asynchronous art workshops for families during the pandemic. The Art Education majors developed curricula to provide engaging ways to create Expressive Self-Portraits, while OT students used principles of adapting and grading activities to modify the curricula to include the participation of children and youth with disabilities, and to introduce disability awareness for participants without disabilities. This collaboration between two very different majors from different colleges within the university allowed them to gain a better understanding of each other’s roles, which will likely lead to stronger professional relationships and improved experiences for children and their families.
