The Undocumented Migration Project is sponsoring an exhibit called “Hostile Terrain 94,” an interactive art project and memorial commemorating the 3,200 migrants who have died crossing the Arizona/Mexico border between the mid-1990s and 2019.

This dramatic exhibition has groups fill out toe tags for individuals that have died in the Sonoran Desert.  The impact of seeing thousands of toe tags on a large blank map of the Sonoran Desert representing this loss of life is both awe inspiring and devastating.

Before the pandemic, Cook Library was scheduled to host this exhibition in the library in the fall. While we are not able to do the outreach and in-person activities associated with Hostile Terrain 94, we have been able to adjust to still have activities associated with it.

This spring, we will host virtual programs about undocumented migration.

(1) Toe Tag Filling Event: Perhaps the most exciting component of this exhibit is the opportunity to participate in a virtual toe tagging event where you will be given a 60-minute module for instruction, the toe tags and your work will be part of the exhibit when it goes up in the fall (hopefully).

This event will be Monday, April 12th at 4pm. Pre-registration is required.

(2) “Change the Subject” Screening & Panel Discussion: Join us for a virtual film screening of “Change The Subject” by directors Jill Baron and Sawyer Broadley. The documentary follows the story of a group of students from Dartmouth College as they fight to to replace the term “Illegal aliens” with “Undocumented immigrants” in the Library of Congress Subject Headings. The film screening will be followed by a brief panel discussion with those impacting and impacted by these changes.

This event will be Wednesday, April 21st at 4pm. Pre-registration is required.
