TODAY! Dean Mullen’s Sabbatical Lecture Series: Dr. Patty Rice Doran

Patty Rice Doran Understanding and Meeting the Needs of Multilingual Learners with and without Disabilities: An Exploration of Preservice Teachers’ Knowledge and Skills

There is an increasing emphasis in research and practical literature on preparing preservice teachers to support diverse and multilingual learners, including those with disabilities. Teachers supporting these students must have a strong knowledge base in special education, disability, culturally responsive practice, and second language acquisition to accurately identify students’ needs and provide appropriate instruction and intervention. Equally important, they need well-developed classroom and intervention skills so that their instruction and intervention are effective.

Patty’s sabbatical research project explored preservice teachers’ knowledge base and practical skills in multilingual learners with disabilities or at risk for disabilities. Her presentation will discuss the current research on preservice teachers’ knowledge and skills, describe the survey instrument developed, and summarize the results.
