Description: This presentation will cover work produced by Associate Professor Phil Davis during the spring 2019 sabbatical period including: a creative documentary animation project and the organization, curating and directing of an international animation festival. The documentary project, tentatively titled “Frank and the Mill” is an experimental animated documentary grounded with audio interviews by Frank Davis who was involved in a paper mill accident in 1969 in East Millinocket, Maine that claimed the lives of two young men. The sabbatical presentation will discuss the project pre-production, audio recordings, and visual materials. The second half of the presentation will focus on the 2019 Sweaty Eyeballs Animation Festival that was organized and planned in spring 2019 and took place October 4-6, 2019 at the SNF Parkway Theatre in Baltimore, MD. Phil Davis has been directing Sweaty Eyeballs Animation screenings in partnership with the Maryland Film Festival since 2012 and during the sabbatical period expanded the scope of the series to a 3-day juried festival including 4 international animated shorts programs, a Baltimore showcase, visiting guest animator retrospective with Joanna Priestly and an opening night program of live music set to silent animation.
