Plastics: what’s recyclable, what’s not

From Feb. 2 to Mar. 28, TU will compete against universities across the United States in RecycleMania. We’re sharing tips throughout the competition to raise awareness for composting, recycling and waste minimization.

Can I recycle all plastics numbered 1 – 7? If not, what are the exceptions?

All narrow neck plastic bottles and jugs, and wide mouth containers numbered 1-7 are accepted in all campus recycling containers. This is different from all 1-7 plastics. For example, while a #1 plastic yogurt cup is acceptable, a #1 plastic clamshell to-go salad container is not. Rigid plastics are also accepted. More guidance can be found on Baltimore County’s list of accepted materials. Try carrying your own reusable bottles, cups and straws to truly reduce waste!
