Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil

The Towson University community is invited to the candlelight vigil for International Transgender Day of Remembrance, tomorrow night, Wednesday, November 20. The event will take place in West Village Ballroom A from 6 to 8 PM. This event is open to all students, colleagues, and community members.

The event will begin at 6 PM, featuring remarks from President Schatzel and a short speech from local transgender activists with the Baltimore Transgender Alliance. Following the remarks, there will be an indoor candlelight vigil and a complete reading of the names of transgender individuals lost in the United States in the last year to transphobic violence. Students, faculty, and staff can show campus-wide solidarity and respect for the lives of those lost by volunteering to read one name. Those interested in volunteering to read a name during the program can sign up with the following link: https://tinyurl.com/TUTDOR

After the reading of names, there will be a gallery-style walk around the ballroom to view the photographic memorial exhibit on display to further honor the lives and stories of all the names read. In attendance will be local organizations that work with the Baltimore LGBTQ+ community during this time, providing information and resources on how to support the Baltimore transgender community.

“Transgender Day of Remembrance is an opportunity for communities to come together and remember transgender people, gender-variant individuals, and those perceived to be transgender who have been murdered because of hate. Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors the memory of those murdered in acts of anti-transgender violence, is recognized annually on November 20.” -Human Rights Campaign
