“‘Refusing to Sink’: Interpreting Communities-to-come”

The Martha A. Mitten Professorship Program, with support from the Graduate Program in Global Humanities, presents

“‘Refusing to Sink’: Interpreting Communities-to-come,” a lecture by

Mina Karavanta, Associate Professor, National & Kapodistrian University of Athens

Wednesday, April 10, 5:00pm in the College of Liberal Arts, LA 4310

Professor Karavanta’s presentation will examine contemporary representations and ideas of community and the human, grounded in the scene of the human disaster on the Mediterranean shores. This scene, she suggests, reveals a new chapter of European exceptionalism while at the same time staging the possibility of new communities to come: “communities of belonging on behalf of vulnerable strangers.”

Light reception to follow.
