Summer Energy Savings at TU

As summer begins and campus occupancy decreases, Towson University is implementing targeted energy-saving measures to reduce our environmental impact and lower operating costs. These adjustments are projected to save the university over $100,000 this season.

What We’re Doing

To maximize energy efficiency, we are implementing the following:

  •  In low-occupancy buildings, temperatures will be raised to 76°F where possible. In areas with little to no use, such as vacated classrooms. Temperatures may be set up to 78–80°F.

  • Building temperatures will be adjusted to 78–80°F during evenings, weekends, and holidays. Please plan accordingly if you’ll be working during these times.

  •  Vacated apartments and residence hall units will also be set to 78–80°F.

We ask that if you need to request temperature adjustments for events or meetings, you contact Facilities Management through your Building Manager.

How You Can Help

Your actions can make a big difference:

  • Unplug unused appliances and electronics.

  • Turn off lights and equipment when not in use.

  • Close blinds to reduce direct sunlight and keep spaces cooler.

  • Raise thermostats a few degrees in unoccupied areas.

  • Keep doors and windows closed when HVAC systems are running.

  • Report energy waste (e.g., unnecessary lighting or equipment left on) to the Facilities Management team.

With your cooperation, we can make our campus more energy-efficient, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective.

Thank you for your continued support!
