The Stranger in Baltimore will explore the work and lives of antebellum Baltimoreans. In the city, young Frederick Douglass learned to read. Edgar Allan Poe launched his writing career. Baltimoreans built the B&O Railroad to secure Western trade. Unhappy couples petitioned the state legislature for permission to divorce. The city hosted the earliest national political conventions. The free Black population pressed for abolitionism. And in its earliest issues, the Baltimore Sun chronicled the Panic of 1837. Protests following earlier bank failures had earned the city the nickname “Mobtown.”
