TU Staff Leave Policy Changes

The University System of Maryland has several important updates effective November 2024, including expanded leave benefits for staff:

Annual Leave Carryover:

  • The maximum carryover limit for annual leave has increased from 50 days (400 hours) to 60 days (480 hours).
  • The maximum payout upon separation remains 400 hours plus any leave accrued in the current calendar year at the time of separation.

Increased Accrual Rates for Non-Exempt Staff:

  • Effective November 27, 2024, annual leave accrual rates for regular non-exempt employees with under 10 years of service have increased (view updated rates HERE).
  • Updates to accrual rates may take several pay periods but will be retroactive to November 27, 2024. Once changes are processed, affected employees will be notified.

New Leave Bank Program:

  • Employees can now donate unused earned sick leave to assist eligible colleagues facing serious health conditions, as defined by the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), who have exhausted their own paid leave. Further details about this program will be shared soon.

Additional Holiday Eligibility:

  • Starting in 2026, employees will be eligible for an additional holiday, totaling 16 holidays annually (or 17 during years with general or congressional elections).
