Join the CSD TODAY for The Sofia Circle.
Join the CSD on Monday, November 11 at 12:30pm for The Sofia Circle. A nod to The Color Purple, the Sofia Circle is a space for processing, dialogue, and community for faculty and staff who identify as Black women.
Sofia’s character in The Color Purple powerfully illustrates many of the struggles faced by Black women, especially in early 20th-century America. Her story emphasizes the intersecting pressures of race, gender, and societal expectations and the toll these can take on a person’s spirit. At the same time, Sofia’s resilience, her refusal to be silenced, and her commitment to self-respect make her a symbol of empowerment in the novel.
Join us in critiquing the oppressive social structures that continue to exist outside of the novel and let’s celebrate our collective strength to challenge them.
