Whether you need help with your Gilman application essays, have questions about applying, or just want more information about the scholarship, stop on by to meet with our primary Gilman Scholarship advisor. TU students are most successful with the Gilman Scholarship when they work with our office, so let us help you! No matter what stage you are in your study abroad planning, all interested students are encouraged to drop by.

What’s the Gilman Scholarship? The U.S. Department of State’s Gilman International Scholarship Program provides scholarships for U.S. undergraduate students who receive a Federal Pell Grant to study or intern abroad for academic credit. The program’s goal is to broaden the student population that studies abroad and interns abroad by supporting undergraduates who might not otherwise participate due to financial constraints and encourages study of languages in diverse countries and world regions. Gilman offers scholarships between $100 to up to $5,000 with supplemental awards of up to $3,000 available for applicants who are studying a critical need language during the experience. The scholarship application is currently open for students studying abroad during the following terms:
- Minimester 2025
- Spring Break 2025
- Spring 2025
- Calendar Year 2025
- Summer 2025 (early decision)
- Fall 2025 (early decision)
- Academic Year 2025-2026 (early decision)
Application deadline for this cycle: OCTOBER 10, 2024
Gilman Scholarship Eligibility:
- U.S. citizenship
- Enrolled as an undergraduate student
- Receives Federal Pell Grant
- Applying for a study or internship program outside of the United States
- Destination has a Travel Advisory Level of 1 or 2 according to the U.S. Department of State

IMPORTANT: All students (except those participating in a TU faculty-led program) must attend a Group Advising session and meet with a Study Abroad & Away Advisor if applying for the Gilman Scholarship. Group Advising sessions are held in person Monday through Friday at 2:00 pm in Rm. #408 on the 4th floor of the Psychology Building as well as virtually on Mondays and Thursdays at 11:00 am via Zoom. No need to RSVP in advance!
