Within contemporary political discourse, the concept of silence and its intricate relationship with trauma, memory, and political action has gained significant traction. Silence manifests as both the inability to articulate harrowing experiences and as a deliberate act of resistance or even punishment. It also serves as the main form of censorship, whether self-imposed or enforced by powerful institutions.
Exploring this multifaceted concept, the panel discussion Silence: Theatre and Democracy will feature esteemed theatre writers and directors Dr. María José Noya Ansede (Fefa Noia) from Spain and Dr. Noam Gil from Israel. Engaging in a nuanced dialogue, they will delve into the political dimensions of silence within theatrical dramaturgies, drawing from their diverse theatrical and political backgrounds.; The discussion will dissect how playwrights employ silence as a subtle yet potent form of political commentary, offering profound insights into its significance in theatre. As Spanish playwright Juan Mayorga aptly remarked, “Theater, the art of the human voice, can render silence audible”.
Drawing from different disciplines, this panel will offer the opportunity to approach pressing issues in the realm of the humanities and democracy. Recent political events and conflicts deserve a constant dialogue to avoid simplification, providing our community with the necessary tools to explore positive and productive solutions. This is the main motivation of this workshop.
