Dr. Leticia Romo’s Sabbatical Talk

Dystopian texts offer a unique insight into the contemporary values and fears that seem to bind a group vis-à-vis the enactment of new ideologies or innovations.  When speculating about how society and its institutions could be affected, classical dystopian texts consistently postulate a greater stratification of society, the marginalization of some of its members, the senseless destruction of nature, and eventually, the extermination of an entire group.

Luisa Valenzuela, and Leticia Martin are two Argentinean authors whose texts exemplify the evolution of this genre in Latin America by female writers. In this talk, we shall demonstrate that despite following the characteristics of canonic dystopia, Valenzuela and Martin present thematic as well as stylistic innovations to warn readers of the dangers that transgressing traditional sex and gender roles pose to society.
