Winter 2023 Commencement – Parking and Traffic Impacts & Information

Towson University Winter Commencement ceremonies will be held on Wednesday, December 20 and Thursday, December 21, 2023. There will be two ceremonies held on Wednesday and one on Thursday at TU Arena.

With more than 2,000 graduates and guests expected on campus over the 2-day period, please expect and prepare for significant impacts on parking and traffic across the campus and on the surrounding roads, between 8 a.m. – 10 a.m. and noon – 2 p.m. each day. In order to provide full support for the TU commencement ceremonies, Parking & Transportation Service offices will be closed on December 20 and December 21, 2023.

Parking Restrictions & Shuttle Information

  • Restricted Parking – Commencement parking permits (and Accessible ADA permits/plates where applicable) are required in all Stadium Lots 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 located near TU Arena and Johnny Unitas Stadium. Faculty/staff (F/S) working in the stadium area should see their supervisor about obtaining a commencement permit to access the area during these days. If unable to obtain a commencement permit, F/S will need to park in general parking areas in the Union garage.
  • General parking for commencement guests without a commencement permit will be available in the Union garage on a first-come, first-served basis. Shuttles to/from the stadium area will be available at the shuttle shelter on the Union garage side of Cross Campus drive. F/S who are working commencement but do not have a Commencement permit should park in the Union garage and take the shuttle to TU Arena/Stadium area.
  • Pick-ups or drop-offs – To avoid traffic congestion, there will be NO pick-ups or drop-offs (including Uber/Lyft & those with mobility issues) allowed at the Stadium, Towson Center and/or TU Arena.  Please proceed to the ground level loop of the Union garage.  (Towsontown Blvd, right on Osler, left at Emerson).  Shuttles will be available on Cross Campus Drive (across from the Administration Building) to take guests, including those with mobility issues, directly to the TU Arena.
  • All graduates are strongly encouraged to have guests carpool in the vehicle that will have the commencement permit.

Miscellaneous Graduate Information:

  • Parking lots open 2 hours prior to the ceremony start time (8 a.m. and 1 pm.) Those arriving before the parking lots are available may be redirected to the Union Garage.
  • Shuttles will begin operating at 8:00 a.m., to take guests from the Union Garage directly to the TU Arena/Stadium area. They will continue to operate through the ceremonies and up to 60 minutes after the last ceremony ends.
  • Rideshare Drop Offs – Guests arriving with rideshare services (Uber, Lyft) will be directed to the loop at the lower level of the Union Garage by turning left at Osler Dr. Guests can then use the garage elevator to conveniently access Level 3 for shuttles going to TU Arena.
  • For more Commencement information, download the commencement guide located in the TU Event Guides App available on the Apple App Store and Google PlayStore.
