Quantifying Resilience Using Information-Based Network Analysis: A Case Study of Samothraki, Greece

The ability to robustly quantify and model the state of a self-organizing system is becoming increasingly valuable with the growing complexity of today’s system structures. Network theories have been extended to socio-economic systems to investigate how they distribute and utilize materials and energy, resulting in literature examining macroscopic system behavior with goals of improving overall sustainability. A recent system analysis technique called the “QtAC” method overcomes data limitation by quantifying system interactions with information. I will discuss our research on a case study evaluating the system health of Samothraki, Greece by applying network analysis.  We examined two approaches: flow-based and information-based analysis. Results indicate that the QtAC method does not accurately depict the Samothraki network structure but does capture evolutionary behavior that has to date been theoretical and qualitative.
