Participants Needed for a Research Study!
Undergraduate Amina Carter (Carter) and mentor professor Dr. Laura Jacobs are researching the academic decisions of Black undergraduate students and how they view education as a potential career choice.
With under 10% of the teaching force identifying as Black (Musu-Gillette, 2017), there is a need to understand why more Black students are not choosing to go into education. This is especially critical as today’s K-12 classrooms represent a variety of identities and communities. For the teaching force to better reflect the diverse student populations, teacher preparation programs must attract and retain teacher candidates of color. Research has found that when students of color have a teacher who looks like them, they are more likely to be placed in Gifted and Talented programs as well as are held to higher standards (Will, 2019). This study will allow teacher preparation programs to hear directly from Black undergraduate students in their own words.
You are invited to participate if you are:
- Black/African American
- 18 years are older
- Able to communicate in English
- Able to consent to participate
- A current undergraduate student at Towson University
Participants will be interviewed in person or via Zoom for 45 minutes to 1 hour (according to the participant’s preference) and will be audio recorded. At the completion of the interview session, participants will be compensated with a $25 Amazon gift card.
If interested in participating, please complete this form.
This study has been approved by Towson University IRB (#2092). If you have questions or concerns, please email either Carter at acarte32@students.towson.edu or Dr. Laura Jacobs at lejacobs@towson.edu.
