Without a Place of Refuge: Exploring Concepts of Black Xenophobia and its Manifestation in U.S. Schools
Classrooms across the U.S. are rapidly diversifying, specifically in regard to student demographics. Within these changing demographics are international and immigrant student populations. While immigration is an expansive issue, there is limited research on African-descent immigrant and international student experiences in U.S. schools. This sabbatical presentation, presented by Dr. Marcia Vandiver, Associate Professor in Elementary Education, will present research from a phenomenological study that explores Black international students pursuing higher education in the United States. Findings indicate that students’ learning experiences are largely shaped by feelings of [in]visibility, “othering,” and navigating racial minority status in U.S. contexts. The findings also provide insight into various support measures that improve student success. To that end, the findings of this study inform preservice teaching practices, student support services, and advising at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
