Tax day is April 18! Follow these simple tips to stay cybersafe

TU’s Office of Information Security reminds you to be vigilant during tax season because there’s always an increase in scams for individuals and for businesses.

AT WORK
Protect the (cyber) door. The National Cybersecurity Alliance provides online tips for tax season, and the number one recommendation is enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA). Towson University uses Duo for MFA to protect important systems, and all TU employees are required to use it to authenticate their identity using both a password and enrolled mobile device. Here are some tips for using Duo:

  • Know what you’re approving. Take a few seconds to review the details in the Duo request to make sure they make sense before approving it. Only approve prompts (calls or app push) you’re 100% confident you’ve requested.
  • Deny unsolicited requests. If you get repeated unsolicited prompts, report it to the OTS Faculty/Staff Help Center.
  • Stay current. Review and update your registered devices using the NetID Management system.

Is it phishing? Don’t click-report it! If you get an email in your TU inbox with tax info or financial requests that seem out of place, forward the email to phishing@towson.edu. TU’s Information Security team will evaluate it’s threat level so they can better protect you and the campus. Learn more about phishing.

AT HOME
Be aware of current tax-related scams, including the Internal Revenue Service’s 2023 “Dirty Dozen” list. See IRS resources for reporting phishing and online scams and reporting tax fraud.
