Sabbatical Talk, by Michael Downs:
Kraków’s Monsters:
Inside the Ancient Legends of Poland
The dragon of Wawel Castle. The pigeons who ages ago were loyal knights to a treacherous king. A sculpture that threatened a king with her words, so he gagged her. These legends and others are often told in Kraków, a cultural capital of Europe that in Medieval times was Poland’s royal city. Michael Downs, an English professor with a specialty in creative writing, spent 10 months in Kraków as a U.S. Fulbright scholar, studying legends and the city’s rich literary history. In this talk, he’ll share how what he learned expanded his approaches to storytelling.
