Wellness Wednesday – Reclaiming Our Tears: Women Navigating Emotions in the Workplace

Every month, the Office of Human Resources hosts a workshop focusing on an aspect of wellness. This month, join Keiwana Perryman from the Center for Student Diversity as she leads Reclaiming Our Tears: Women Navigating Emotions in the Workplace.

Is it okay to cry at work? Depends on who you ask, what the situation is, how frequently it happens, and who is around. Women, particularly women of color, have been fed messages regarding their emotions (i.e., when to show them, where to show them, who not to show them in front of) since the beginning of time. “Crying is a sign of weakness.” “Don’t let them see you cry!” “You need to control your emotions.” We have all heard it before. For those whose spirit communicates from a place of vulnerability, sometimes it can be challenging to navigate when to lean into those messages and when to resist. Considering the state of affairs, we find ourselves in as a society, it is baffling that more of us aren’t hypersensitive and emotional.

To create a safe(r) space, this session is only open to women and femmes of the Towson University faculty and staff.

Participants will: This presentation seeks to hold space for women and femmes to:

  • Explore messaging received regarding showing emotions in the workplace
  • Discuss ways in which one navigates emotions in the workplace
  • Share personal strategies, tips, and tricks

This session will be on Wednesday, December 7th from 1:00-2:30 pm in the University Union – Center for Student Diversity Office – Room UU349B
