TU The Pursuit of Happiness: A Cultural Comparison of the US and Italy
Learn about the pursuit of human happiness in the U.S. and Italy in summer 2023. Positive Psychology is the study of “that which makes life worth living.” Humans have been in pursuit of the “good life” for centuries, though what constitutes a life well-lived is dependent upon the cultural context. Participants will compare and contrast the ways American and Italian cultures have sought happiness throughout history, gain awareness of health and well-being in the U.S., and then view these concepts through the Italian cultural lens. Students will have the opportunity to interact with local residents, scholars, and students in Rome and Florence to gain a full understanding of positive psychology across both cultures.
Program highlights include visits to the Galleria Borghese and Uffizi Gallery, the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica, a walking tour of Rome by night, and a Florence foodie tour.
Participants will take either PSYC 494 Travel and Study Abroad in Psychology (3 credits) or PSYC 595 Travel and Study Abroad in Psychology (3 credits; grad only) with Prof. Christa Schmidt and Prof. Kerri Goodwin.
Full program details and the application are available in Horizons.
