TU French Language and Culture in Martinique
Study French language and culture in the heart of the Caribbean with TU in Summer 2023. The program is based in Fort-de-France on the island of Martinique in the French West Indies. Known as the “island of flowers,” Martinique boasts white sandy beaches, a turquoise sea, exciting culinary experiences, and a vibrant local culture. Participants will take classes at the France Langue school which offers courses at all levels (beginners to advanced) in grammar, conversation, literature, and culture.
Program highlights include visits to St. Louis Cathedral, The Schoelcher Library, the Ecomuseum, the Balata Gardens, the Slave Heritage Village, the Banana Museum, the Paul Gaugin Center, the House of Sugar Cane, the Habitation Belfort, the Museum of Pre-Colombian Archeology and Prehistory, and a guided hike up Mt. Pelée.
Participants will take 3 credit hours of French as determined by consultation with Dr. Alisha Reaves prior to departure. Courses include: FREN 101 French Elements I (3 credits, Core 5), FREN 102 French Elements II (3 credits, Core 12), FREN 201 French Intermediate I (3 credits, Core 5), FREN 202 French Intermediate II (3 credits, Core 12), FREN 301 Advanced Conversation (3 credits, Core 5), and FREN 949 Travel and Study Abroad: History and Culture of Martinique (3 credits).
