“DEEP UNIVERSE”
By: Dr. Duilia F. de Mello, astronomer and professor and Vice Provost for Global Strategies at Catholic University of America, Washington, DC
Telescopes are time machines. With deep images from the Hubble Space Telescope, we can travel 12 billion years into the past and observe galaxies when the universe was just an infant. In this talk I will summarize what we have learned about galaxy evolution since we started staring at the sky with Hubble and what to expect with the new James Webb Space Telescope. I will also talk about Deep Images of Mergers, a citizen project that proves that inspiring science can be done at home. I will finalize by telling the story of the Mulher das Estrelas (Woman of the Stars) project and how we can change the world, student by student.
