Advancing Equity in the Early Care and Education of Bilingual Children

FRIDAY, APRIL 8TH | 11 am – 12:30 pm via Zoom

Presented by Dr. Dina C. Castro

Immigration within and across continents is currently a global reality. The number of people leaving their communities in search for a better life for them and their families has increased dramatically during the last twenty years. About 20% of the world’s total international migrants live in the United States. As a result of these migration movements, there is an increase in linguistic diversity in school settings; and, bilingual children ages 0-8 are a third of the U.S. child population.

This session will focus on the importance of children’s bilingual development, cultural diversity, and diverse abilities with an emphasis on how educators can work towards the goal of equity in early childhood education.

The learning objectives of this professional development workshop are:

  1. To discuss how bilingualism influences young children’s development and how it is addressed in early childhood education programs.
  2. To learn about the characteristics of equitable high quality early childhood care and education programs for bilingual children.
  3. To identify next steps to advance equity in early childhood care, education, policy, and practice.
