Creative Coding On and Through the Web

Creative Coding On and Through the Web

Friday, November 19, 2021, 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. CK 404B and Online via Zoom

This workshop will explore the web-based creative coding platform p5.js, with a series of introductory activities that invite experimentation with image-making, interactivity, and multi-media using coding processes. Tools for remote, real-time collaborative coding will also be explored, and resources will be shared for more ambitious multi-media extensions beyond the scope of our time together.

The contemporary world is increasingly shaped by digital materials performing processes written in code. Studio practices cultivated in the arts and humanities don’t always provide students with the material skills to critically respond to these endemic systems. And technical practices cultivated in STEM spaces don’t always provide students with the critical skills to critique, and not just participate in, the creation of algorithmic systems. Creative coding is an interdisciplinary approach encouraging the critical creation of code-based artworks, which can enrich the student experience in both the art studio and the computer lab.

No prior coding is required. Folks with prior coding experience looking to explore a new tool (or new ways of thinking about coding) are welcome, though!
