Diversity and Inclusion in Choral Music : Guest Speaker Series

The potential of music to promote change in our society is the inspiration behind the Guest Speaker series presented for the Department of Music community during the Spring of 2021.

The department invited Rollo Dilworth and Alysia Lee, two African-American choral conductors and educators, to engage with music students and community members in a conversation around the issues of diversity, inclusion and equity as it pertains to choral music. The discussion challenged participants to think about their role as future music teachers and performers as promoters of change.

David Cosper, Dept. of Music

Sound Bodies: Music & Disability

In recent years, the intersection between music and disability studies has been a fruitful area of scholarly research, creative work, and pedagogical innovation. This COFAC-funded Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion event brought four artist/scholar/activists to campus for a 90-minute event including individual presentations on their professional experiences of ableism in music and academic culture and concluding with a student-driven roundtable discussion.

New Pedagogical Materials for Bassoon

As never before the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us the importance of having online pedagogical materials ready for students. This presentation will provide an overview of the results of my sabbatical, which included several new videos and thousands of new bassoon accompaniments. In addition, the presentation will unveil the new online curriculum for bassoon supporting the Maryland Music Educators’ grading for bassoon solos.
