TODAY! Quarantine Cards Art Class

Wednesday, March 24th at 5:30pm

Hosted by Morna McDermott (Elementary Education, College of Education)

In this time of isolation and introspection, so many of us find ourselves challenged to discover new ways to connect with those we love and to express the complexity of emotions we are experiencing. In this 2-hour workshop participants will explore techniques of creative expression through collage/mixed media. Using original photographs, magazines images, words, and other items, Morna will guide participants in the journey of making “Quarantine Cards.” Each card tells a story and is created with a special person in mind, resulting in a “secret messaging” between the sender and the recipient. The art cards are one-of-a-kind “post cards” participants can send to loved ones who they have been unable to be with because of the pandemic.

This activity can be done easily with a bare minimum of available materials:
  • Scissors
  • Glue (and/or ModgePodge … spray adhesive works, too)
  • One, or more, paint brushes (to apply the adhesive to the backs of the collage materials)
  • Any wet or dry materials that want such as: paints, markers, pastels, crayons or colored pencils
  • Thick paper like watercolor paper, could even use old greeting cards (can be covered), construction paper-paper that can withstand layers of paper and glue, basically. Ideal size is 4×7 (post card size)
  • Newspapers and magazines for cutting out and collaging words and images (and scrapbook materials if available but not required)
