Dance Professor, Susan Mann Virtual Sabbatical Report: Thrown

Sabbatical Report: Susan Mann, COFAC Dance

During the fall of 2019, Susan Mann created a dance for the camera as her sabbatical project.  She collaborated with her husband, John Mann, who shot the project in Super 16mm film and composed the music; Wil Crowther, who provided the costuming; and TU dance faculty, alumni and students among others.  The four and one-half minute project is a visual depiction of the philosophic concept of “thrown-ness” — hence, the title “Thrown”.  The piece begins with an older woman sitting at home reading a newspaper, and follows her as she is “thrown” into a hostile, alien environment.  It focuses on the feeling (not the narrative) of not belonging … of being an outsider.  It will take five minutes to watch, and we hope you enjoy it.
