Are you 18-45 years old and physically active?
Purpose: We are conducting a study to confirm the use of ultrasound to assess acute changes in muscle size after an exercise session focusing on quadriceps movement and confirming these measures against blood biomarkers.
Inclusion criteria: healthy, non-smokers, 18-45 years old, with a body mass index (BMI) of < 30kg/m2, and recreationally active (~30 min/day of moderate-intensity cardiovascular and/or resistance training on 3-5 days/week)
Exclusion criteria: competitive or advanced-level strength trained athletes, musculoskeletal problems that would prevent you from participating in a single high-intensity exercise bout or regularly taking prescription strength anti-inflammatories (daily doses of ibuprofen, asprin, naproxen, etc).
Requirements: Testing will involve 2 visits to our lab at Towson University (Visit 1 is ~2hrs and Visit 2 is 30 min)
Testing will include:
-
- Questionnaires about your health and physical activity
- Ultrasound scans of muscle
- Blood Draws
- Blood pressure measures
- Quadriceps muscle strength
- Body composition analyses
- A single interval-based exercise session targeting the quadriceps muscles
