It’s National Data Privacy Day! Here’s how you can protect data and promote privacy
Today is Data Privacy Day, and Towson University joins the National Cyber Security Alliance in this global effort as a 2020 Data Privacy Day Champion.
Privacy is a year-round priority at TU. The Office of Information Security in the Office of Technology Services (OTS) encourages TU to be #PrivacyAware by spreading awareness of the importance of privacy and protecting personal information.
Join the Data Privacy Day effort
- Follow TU’s official technology accounts on Twitter @TechAtTU and Facebook @TechnologyAtTU for privacy and security tips.
- Check out the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s STOP.THINK.CONNECT. website for cyber resources and advice.
- Explore the recommendations below for protecting personal information at TU and at home.
Protect your Privacy
At home:
- Evaluate accounts and device privacy settings. Configure settings on personal accounts to your liking, which makes it more difficult for hackers to steal your information.
- Consider how your personal info is collected through apps and websites.
- Share with care-think before you post online, especially personal details about your location or family members.
- Protect your passwords. Don’t share them with anyone!
At TU:
- Watch the OTS Training video about handling confidential data at TU.
- Check out the Data Privacy webpage for more resources and to learn about types of data, how it is classified and handled at TU.
- Use the Password Guidelines to learn how to create strong passwords.
- Report suspicious or phishing emails by using the “Report phish” button in Outlook, or by forwarding it to phishing@towson.edu.
- If you believe your account has been compromised or you need technical assistance, submit a TechHelp service request or contact OTS at 410-704-5151.
