Welcome Back from TUPD
The Towson University Police Department (TUPD) welcomes you to a safe spring 2020 term.
TUPD’s goal is to create a safe place to live, work and learn. We believe that creating a safe, cooperative environment is easier when the campus community is fully informed about policies regarding safety, security and crimes that occur on or near campus, and crime prevention programs and services. You can find this information on our Facebook page and our website.
We encourage you to make personal safety your number one priority while on campus. Awareness, avoidance, and risk reduction are the best ways to prevent becoming a victim. The following tips can help you remain safe during your time here.
General Safety Tips:
- If you are the victim of a crime, report it to the police immediately.
- Contact TUPD by dialing 410-704-4444 for on campus emergencies. Medical and off-campus emergencies, please dial 911.
- Remember to sign up for the TU Safer Mobility App. To download the app, search “Towson University” in the App store or Google Play.
- Always lock your doors and windows.
- Never walk alone at night. Travel in groups of two or more and always travel in well-lit, heavily traveled areas. Use Towson’s Escort Service by calling 410-704-SAFE (7233).
- When you are going out, tell a friend where you are going and when you will return. Carry a whistle or noise maker, which can serve as a reminder to exercise caution and will alert someone in the area if you need help. Whistles are available free of charge at TUPD’s Community Outreach Offices located in the West Village Commons Room #201. Whistles are limited to one per person at any given time.
- Be alert! Look around you, and maintain an awareness of your surroundings. Make it difficult for anyone to take you by surprise.
- Do not walk in public while talking on your cell phone, texting, or even openly carrying the device. Conceal the phone in your pocket. If you must be on the phone, be aware of your surroundings.
- If listening to music, keep the volume low so you can hear what is going on around you.
- If you exercise at night or in the dark, do so with a friend and wear bright reflective clothing.
- Follow your intuition and trust your gut. If something doesn’t look or seem right, contact the police.
As always, TUPD is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We wish you a safe and productive spring term!
