Join us this spring semester as we host
- February 12th, ft. Joan Antunes PhD, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Sociology, Anthropology and Criminal Justice
-
- Residential mobility can have many positive effects on children, youth, and adults including reduction in victimization, criminal involvement, and receipt of welfare; increased employment and adult income; better health; and improved parenting practices. However, it may also be linked to detrimental outcomes including adverse mental health and increased exposure to community violence and violent victimization and involvement in violent behavior. The project assesses the extent to which moving within a city affects minority (racial and ethnic) and immigrant youth experiences, particularly in relation to changes in their neighborhood including collective efficacy; a major characteristic shaping community crime rates and youth violence. This study specifically examines whether vertical mobility (upward or downward changes in neighborhood context) or horizontal mobility (no changes in neighborhood context) influence youth victimization and violence.
- March 4th, ft. João Pedro Amaral, Fulbright TA, Portuguese Instructor, PhD candidate in Literary Theory at Federal University of Santa Maria Brazil
-
- This talk will focus on experimental research conducted in a youth detention center located in Santa Maria/RS, Brazil. In this socioeducational project, a group of 11 youths deprived of liberty, after having workshops on audio-visual literacy, has created a song and recorded a music video called ‘A Dream of Liberty’.
- April 22nd, ft. Kate Collins PhD, Program Director of Interdisciplinary Arts Infusion
- In this session, attendees will learn about the arts-based pedagogical innovations of the Youth Artists and Allies taking Action in Society (YAAAS!) project, where TU graduate students work alongside of refugee youth. Project director Kate Collins and graduate student Ana Maria Economou, will share the ways in which the reciprocal learning design of YAAAS has evolved. Complimented by a photo narrative and intertwined with student feedback, the session will explore the culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogical approaches used to support English language acquisition and social adjustment of refugee youth while also expanding the global competency of the educators who work in partnership.
