Make that new smart device more secure using these tips
So you received the perfect gift over the holidays. Tech items are designed to assist in making our lives easier by connecting to the Internet, but that requires us to share more of our information. We need to take necessary steps in ensuring that our smart devices are secure, so the Office of Information Security (OIS) offers these tips to improve security on personal devices:
- Install all recent security patches and updates, as made available by your provider.
- Set a security lock on the device such as a password, pin, or thumbprint.
- Install a virus protection software if the device allows it.
- Connect your devices to trusted networks. When on campus, always connect to tu-secure.
- Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks to do personal banking or shopping.
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication or configure the privacy settings if your device allows it.
- Use a unique password that isn’t tied to other accounts.
- Create strong security questions that only you know the answer to-and keep it private.
