Figuring Out Math within Figure Skating – Sabbatical Talk

Presentor:     Dr. Diana Cheng, Towson University.

Abstract:     This presentation describes how mathematical modeling can be used to solve key problems in figure skating to inform athletes, coaches, and policy makers, including:

■ Based on biomechanical principles, how might skaters break records in spinning
and jumping?
■ Based on past competitors’ scores, what jumps were needed at certain levels for
athletes to qualify for Nationals?
■ Based on previous competition entries, what geographic boundaries should be
set for future collegiate competitions?

This talk is accessible to undergraduate students.
