Modification to external email tagging starts today
Starting today, faculty and staff will notice a minor update to the line of text, or the tag, at the top of Outlook emails received from external (non-TU) senders:
- Previous text: [EXTERNAL]
- Updated text: [EXTERNAL EMAIL – USE CAUTION]
As the campus’ phishing-awareness matures, so does the way we approach improving on that awareness. “Use caution” is being added is to provide extra information about the tag and its purpose-specifically to remind faculty and staff to use caution when looking at external emails. This tag will be viewable on desktops and mobile devices. Lack of the tag doesn’t mean the email is safe, just as seeing the tag doesn’t mean it’s safe.
As with other TU information security measures, such as DUO Multi-Factor Authentication, external email tagging for TU Outlook accounts is not optional. No actions or special training required. If you have questions, please contact OTS’ Office of Information Security at OIS@towson.edu.
