Here’s what to do if you’re getting phone and text scams

Have you received an unsolicited text message on your cell phone asking you to click a link to claim a prize, or call from an unrecognizable number requesting you to provide personal information? Phone scams are considered illegal and can cause just as much damage as phishing emails received in your inbox.

What to do if you’ve received this type of scam
If you’ve answered any of these type of calls or received any unwanted text messages:

  • do not respond back with any personal information
  • forward the text message to 7726 (SPAM) and follow the instructions
  • delete the text message from your inbox
  • consider registering your phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry.

If you’ve fallen victim to Identity Theft, please contact the Towson University Police Department (TUPD) at 410-704-4444 or police@towson.edu. For more text spam resources, visit the Federal Trade Commission’s site: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0350-text-message-spam.
