Music and Culture in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Study music, identity, and globalization in Brazil with Dr. Cristina Magaldi in summer 2019. Immerse yourself in the sights and sounds of Rio de Janeiro while learning about the music and culture of this exuberant city. Participants will examine the influence European and African heritage has had on music practices in Rio and explore the role music plays in shaping and challenging social and race relations. Through observation and performances students will have the opportunity to engage with both traditional and new musical styles that are popular in Rio today.
Program highlights include workshops and guest lectures at the UNIRio Villa-Lobos School of Music, attendance at musical performances and concerts, and visits to the Christ the Redeemer Statue and Pao de Acucar.
Students will earn credit for one of the following courses: MUSC 471/571/671 or LAST 484.
