Make that new smart device more secure using these tips

So you received the perfect gift over the holidays. If it connects to the Internet, it is considered to be part of  The Internet of Things (IoT). These items are designed to assist in making our lives easier, but it requires us to share more of our information, so we need to take necessary steps in ensuring that our IoT devices are secure. The Office of Technology Services (OTS) offers these tips:

  • Install all recent security patches and updates, as made available by your provider.
  • Set a security lock on the device such as a passcode or thumbprint.
  • Enable Multi-Factor Authentication or configure the privacy settings if your device allows it.
  • Use strong passwords. See the University’s Password Guidelines for requirements and suggestions.

Tips for your work or personal smart devices

  • Install a virus protection software if the device allows it.
  • Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks to do personal banking or shopping.
  • Connect your devices to trusted networks. When on campus, connect to tu-secure wireless network.
  • If you misplace a University-owned device, submit a TechHelp service request as soon as possible.
