Congratulations to the student contributors to Volume 69 of Towson University’s literary magazine, Grub Street, on winning eleven awards in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 37th Gold Circle Awards program.  Faculty advisor, Jeannie Vanasco, Assistant Professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts, considers herself fortunate “to work with such talented and hard-working students.”

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association received more than 5,100 news and magazine entries this year from campuses around the country.  Only works by students are eligible for awards. Grub Street’s cover design won first place and student work took awards in seven categories.

  1. First Place, free-form poetry: Ashley Wagner for “Second Fiddle” (recent graduate in the Professional Writing graduate program)
  2. First Place, alternative story form: Makenzie Sisson for “List of Symptoms of Something I Cannot Name that I Have Taped to My Fridge” (recent graduate in Environmental Science & Studies with minors in Creative Writing and Chemistry)
  3. First Place, cover design: Deandra Lee and William Hartman for “Loop” (Lee, photographer, and Hartman, recent graduate in Art & Design)
  4. Second Place, portfolio illustration: Liza Dennis (recent graduate in Art & Design)
  5. Second Place, free-form poetry and winner of Grub Street’s high school contest, selected by novelist Jung Yun: Angela Qian for “Tabletops”
  6. Second Place, traditional fiction: Taryn Painter for “A Day on Race Street” (History and Political Science major with minor in Human Rights & History)
  7. Third Place, free-form poetry: Briseyda Barrientos-Ariza for “Storms in Ice Cages” (English and Psychology major)
  8. Third Place, experimental fiction: Yehudis Rabinowitz for “Race” (Art & Design major)
  9. Third Place, alternative story form: Yehudis Rabinowitz for “Race” (Art & Design major)
  10. Third Place, single illustration (computer generated): Bridget Roddy for “Hypebae” (illustrator and law student)
  11. Honorable mention for single illustration (computer generated): Deandra Lee for “Loop” (photographer)

In addition, Volume 69 is one of only eight finalists for a Silver or Gold Crown Award from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Finalists are all winners, not nominees. Finalists will be revealed as either Gold or Silver Crowns at their presentation in March 2021.
