TODAY! Confronting Hard History in an Online Simulation
Dean Mullen’s Sabbatical Lecture Series
Presented by: Rebecca Shargel, Ed.D.,Professor, Department of Learning Technologies, Design & School Library
Monday, May 12th
10:00 – 11:00 a.m.
Cook Library 507
In this presentation, Dr. Shargel will share the experiences of graduate students who participated in a unique asynchronous online simulation, role-playing alongside middle school students and their teachers across several private schools. The simulation focused on whether to remove the Confederate Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery– exploring how graduate students confronted hard history through both “in-character” participation and “out-of-character” reflection.
The framework guiding this study is Judith Pace’s theory of contained risk-taking, which advises teachers on creating conditions for classroom discussions while managing the risks associated with confronting such histories. Implications of this study include future practice of how educators can guide students to face hard history while considering outlets for emotional expression alongside intellectual dimensions.
